Last year I compiled a list of tips to help mums feel a little more trendy in their everyday. These were just simple and inexpensive ideas to consider adding to an outfit. Sure there are plenty of “trends” to follow each season which can definitely help your cause however following multiple trends can end up confusing and expensive.
I’ve recently noticed there is another factor involved in looking trendy / edgy. I see the celebs doing it. I see the top fashion bloggers doing it. It’s the secret ingredient that gives them that effortless style. That look that appears as though they made no effort at all. The secret to looking too cool for school is:
It’s really quite a simple process:
Step 1: Take one item with a very relaxed look. E.g. ripped jeans, fraying denim shorts, loose fitting t-shirt etc.
Step 2: Add an item with a more structured and polished look. E.g. A collared shirt, blazer, pointed toe heels, pencil skirt etc.
And that’s all there is to it. Allow me to attempt to demonstrate.
Example 1: Ripped jeans plus blazer
Example 2: Casual shorts and a collared shirt
Example 3: Drop crotch pants and blazer
Example 4: Pencil skirt and a T-shirt
There are endless ways to contrast. You could also try:
- Ripped jeans and pointed toe shoes (flats or heels). There are literally a gazillion pics of this combo on pinterest
- Floral / frilly dress with a denim jacket
- Shorts and a blazer
- Denim shorts and heels
- Drop crotch pants and heels
The same applies to accessories. Adding some bling or statement pieces to a casual outfit can provide the same contrasting effect. Have a look through your wardrobe and see what contrasts the most. Try them together and you might just stumble on a fabulous new way to wear “that old thing”
