I’ve had a long and happy relationship with shorts. Always loved them as a kid and continued to enjoy them through my teens. I had numerous pairs of those classic Sportsgirl tartan shorts and I remember loving the chance to wear them with a Sportsgirl branded T-shirt whenever there was a mufty day at school. Throughout my twenties I wore them a lot to the beach on the weekends and on camping trips with friends. Such an easy option when you want to be super casual.
Then I had my kids and discovered how essential shorts are when you’re breastfeeding in summer! Not a lot of dresses are breast feeding friendly so I found shorts and a top to be the easiest option. Also handy when you’re chasing a toddler around a playground in between breastfeeding your baby
These days I still love shorts for super casual mum duty days. Last summer I was given a beautiful pair of white lacy shorts from a local boutique on Sydney’s Northern Beaches – Alice n Cooper. I had a look back at my Instagram feed and I wore these shorts at least 16 times!! They’re comfortable and a little bit interesting with the lace detail. They also go with pretty much any top.
In today’s moodboard I’ve included a variety of short styles:
- Chino shorts
- Denim shorts
- Printed shorts
- Tailored shorts
I think the best tip for wearing shorts is to try lots of styles on in order to work out what you like best. I have rather short legs so prefer a shorter, mid thigh length (but not too short please!). I don’t love the knee length style on me but it looks great on those with long legs. A tailored pair of shorts can also be worn with heels for a more dressy occasion which is another way to get more wear from your shorts.
Number 5 is very similar to my pair of white lace shorts above. I also own number 1 which are seriously comfy with a wide elastic waistband and very lightweight fabric.1. Flirty short $24.95 by Cotton On; 2. Classic chino short in pebble $24.95 by Cotton On; 3. Cargo shorts in chambray $35 by Target; 4. Botanical print tailored shorts $39 by Target.
So please tell me, did you ever own a pair of tartan Sportsgirl shorts in the nineties? Do you like to wear shorts now?
